What is Battle of the Buffalo Wing Festival?

Battle of the Buffalo is an annual chicken wing festival held at Big Spring Park in Downtown Huntsville, Alabama. This April, for the fourteenth round, local restaurants and amateur cooks will compete with their tastiest wings in an effort to be crowned best of the Tennessee Valley. Last round, with the help of our generous restaurants and sponsors, Battle of the Buffalo brought together more than 3,000 community members, served over 50,000 wings, and presented the Russel Hill Cancer Foundation with $30,100 and The HudsonAlpha Foundation with $12,900. This year, in its ninth year as a Downtown Huntsville Inc. Featured Event, Battle of the Buffalo Wing Festival will boast wing entries from local restaurants, various vendors from the community, a celebrity judging panel that includes key individuals across the Huntsville/Madison areas, an entire afternoon of live music, and a kid-friendly fun zone. The men of Alpha Tau Omega, along with the Russel Hill Cancer Foundation and HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, invite you to join us in continuing a tradition of love, health, and charity.

How Did It Begin?

Since 2009, our event has been held every year in memory of Paul “Fish” Salmon. Paul was diagnosed with leukemia in 2006 and underwent treatment at the Clearview Cancer Institute (CCI). He was a brother of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and a senior at The University of Alabama in Huntsville when he passed away in 2007. In 2009, the men of Alpha Tau Omega hosted their first festival centered on Buffalo wings, Paul’s favorite snack. Thus far, the event has raised over $275,000 for the Russel Hill Cancer Foundation and the HudsonAlpha Foundation and continues to support local cancer patients undergoing treatment at CCI and cancer research at HudsonAlpha.

What is HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology?

HudsonAlpha is a genomic science and applications nonprofit organization. It is a high-volume genomic data producer and global scientific collaborator valued for genomic data analysis and interpretation to solve questions in cancer, undiagnosed childhood genetic disorders, neuropsychiatric disorders, immune-related diseases, agriculture, and more. HudsonAlpha researchers, geneticists, and bioinformaticians apply the power of genomics to detect, prevent and treat disease.

What is Russel Hill Cancer Foundation?

Russel Hill Cancer Foundation is a local 501(c)3 non-profit organization committed to improving the health of the area. Every dollar donated supports one of their three initiatives:  a bold, innovative cancer research program, educational opportunities for local citizens and the medical community, and regular transportation, housing, and financial assistance for eligible patients. RHCF supports the Clearview Cancer Institute, a phase 1 cancer research center. CCI is able to bring experimental treatments to patients who need it in the now as opposed to traditionally getting it in the future, all thanks to Russel Hill. Russel Hill and CCI are a collection of dedicated doctors, nurses, administrators, and team members whose main goal is to impact their community in a big way.
